We decided that we would have him weigh and measure every two weeks.  We set for Tony the goal of gaining 40 pounds of lean muscle by November 10, 1998.  As a way to motivate Tony, I promised him that if he followed my protocol exactly, we would have photos taken of him by a photographer friend of mine on November 10.  I even promised him that I would invite another friend of mine, Miss USA, Sallie Toussaint, to photograph with him if he gave me decent results.  Check her out at: http://www.elitefitness.com/tony/sallie/

Although I wanted Tony to look into something hardcore, his only stipulation for following my program was that he would not use anything illegal.  Now as many of you know, while natural, about the most that an athlete can hope to achieve in a year's time is about 8 pounds of muscle.  This left us with a very difficult challenge.  How could we help Tony go from 160lbs to 200lbs using only diet training and supplements?

Tony's Diet:
Any successful bodybuilder knows the importance of food.  Knowing what to eat is at least as important as knowing how to train.  I'm going to share with you the radical truth about the bulking diets that have become popular in the pro ranks.  Here's what separates a 250 lbs. monster from a 160 lbs. novice.

Slabs of lean red meat.  Tablespoon upon tablespoon of natural peanut butter.  Flax seed and other vegetable oils by the liter.  Quality protein isolate shakes by the bucket.  Legions of fatty fish -- like sardines, salmon, etc.  Dozens of whole eggs and pounds of natural oatmeal.

Being hardcore means eating hardcore.  Your body will need energy for working out, the raw ingredients for making testosterone and fuel for recovery.  Pro-hormones and lysophosphatidylcholine will increase your appetite, but they themselves do not turn into muscle.  The pro-hormones facilitate the conversion of food into muscle instead of fat.  In other words, you'll need to make an effort to eat a lot more than you may be comfortable with.

I got an email the other day from a guy who gained 20 lbs. taking Mass Quantities Norabol and Prodiol.  When I asked him about his diet, he had these words to say...

"What I think is equally important is the fact that at a starting weight of 180 pounds on a 6 foot tall frame, I ate between 4000 to 5000 calories a day, while downing between 250-300 grams of protein per day (along with 2 Norabol 5 times a day).  I think that many novice lifters fail to realize that if you don't eat and sleep well it doesn't matter what supplements you take or how hard you lift."

He concluded with this often-ignored piece of advice "You have to eat big to get big."  Tony got most of his calories from the complex carbohydrates -- potatoes, pasta, rice, beans, oats, and cream of wheat.  He also took lots of quality fats in the form of high lignan oils.  His protein came primarily from lean red meat and Soy Isolate.

Ask Lee Priest or Nasser El Sonbaty.  These guys get positively huge in the off season when their focus is building muscle and getting strong.  They don't do it on chicken breast and tuna.  They're eating pounds of unsaturated fat and quantities of protein that are best measure in cubic yards.

If you're going to do it right, you'll need help, eating 4,000 to 5,000 calories of solid food daily is very tough.  Flax Seed Oil and Soy Isolate Deluxe are essential.  You need to balance the omega-6 fatty acids in eggs and peanut butter with the rare, and valuable, omega-3 fatty acids in Flax Seed Oil.  Soy Isolate Deluxe is one of the best ways I can think of to keep your kidneys and liver healthy while downing gram after gram of high quality protein.

Tony's Training:

Intensity is the single most crucial factor to success in your training.  Intensity can be defined as the percent of your momentary ability to perform an exercise.  One set per exercise is productive, although some high intensity advocates sometimes choose to perform more than one set.  Some people may require additional sets.  As a general rule, with of course some exceptions, one set performed in a high intensity manner will provide all the stimulation you need.  As Tony was taking a very high dosage of pro-hormones, we felt that he could safely take each set to failure three times after one warm up set.  This is assuming a high level of pro-hormones or steroids.  Training naturally, even less is needed.

When you're in the gym you want to focus your energies on only performing work that is productive, i.e., growth producing.  In good form, you push yourself as far as you can go on every set.  Now, by training this way you simply CANNOT do the marathon 2-3 hour workouts the "pros" claim they do in the muscle mags.  You can train long or you can train hard, but you cannot train long and hard.

It has been shown that the HARDER that you train (intensity), the GREATER the adaptive response.  A high level of intensity is characterized by performing an exercise to the point of concentric (positive) MUSCULAR FAILURE, i.e., you've exhausted your muscles to the extent that the weight cannot be moved for any more repetitions.  Failure to reach this level of intensity will result in little or no gains in strength or size.  Anything less than 100% intensity should be regarded as a warm-up because it will do very little to stimulate growth.  Warm ups are important to prevent injury and achieve optimal performance on the working sets, but do not expect to get huge only performing warm ups.

For a muscle to increase in size and strength it must be forced to do PROGRESSIVELY HARDER WORK.  The one thing that all experts agree on is that increases in strength always lead to increases in size.  If you get stronger, you will grow.  Your muscles must be overloaded with a workload that is increased steadily and systematically throughout the course of your program.  This is often referred to as PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD.  Therefore every time you work out you should attempt to increase either the weight you use or the repetitions you perform relative to your previous workout.  This can be viewed as a "double progressive" technique (resistance and repetitions).  Challenging your muscles in this manner will force them to adapt to the imposed demands.  If you're already in your target rep range-eight repetitions for example-you're better off adding more weight than you are increasing the number of reps.  In other words, if you got to rep 12 without failure or the aid of a spotter, the weight was too light!

Tony worked especially hard on the eccentric or lowering phase of each rep.  The lowering phase of a rep should be emphasized because it makes the exercise more efficient: the same muscles that are used to raise the weight concentrically are also used to lower it eccentrically.  As a general rule, one maximum-intensity set per exercise is all the stimulation you need.  In addition, this portion of the rep often puts GREATER stress on the muscle.  In an 8-12 rep scheme with the above guidelines, each set should take you between 48-72 seconds until you reach concentric muscular failure.

Tony's Supplementation:

Week two:  Here we got much more ambitious with our dosages.  We wanted to raise the levels of nandrolone and testosterone in Tony's system dramatically so that he could saturate his receptors and make the best gains possible.

Week three:  Here we got still more ambitious with our dosages.  Interestingly, in week two, Tony noticed that his sex drive had decreased slightly.  This is unusual since usually, the pro-hormones have the exact opposite effect.  I think it was probably from over training so we cut down slightly on the intensity of the workouts.  In week three we pushed the limits of what is acceptable in terms of pro-hormone dosages.

At the end of week ten, we had the photo shoot.  Tony was looking great and had worked very hard.  I wanted to make sure that he kept the lion's share of his gains, so I had him follow a strict post-cycle protocol.  I also had to lecture him on the importance of stopping the pro-hormones to let his system re-regulate.  Apparently, he felt so good on the pro-hormones, that he was reluctant to stop.  In week eleven through the end of week thirteen, we cut out all the pro-hormones.  He continued the other supplements as follows until the end of week thirteen:
